Abstract:
Peach latent mosaic (PLM) is still an infectious disease of unknown origin.
No virus particles were observed by electron microscopy by dip method or in semipurified plant extracts.
An infectious fraction was obtained by nucleic acid extraction followed by fractionation by LiCl precipitation and cellulose CF11 chromatography.
When this fraction was analyzed by sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation, infectivity was recovered at the top of the gradient.
Biological properties of the disease, in particular accentuation of symptoms at high temperature and properties of the nucleic acid fractions are in favour of a viroidal etiology.
