Abstract:
Black line or brown line was observed at the grafting point of two scion/rootstock species combinations infected by cherry leaf roll virus (CLRV) : Juglans regia grafted on the resistant species J. nigra, and resistant Prunus domestica grafted on P. cerasifera. Brown line was observed also in Virginia Crab apple grafted on Malus pumila infected with apple stem grooving virus (SGV).
The study, carried out by ELISA tests, showed the slow progress of the virus in the receptive species and the formation of black line by xylem, phloem and parenchyma necrosis at the union with the immune host.
The necrosis seems to be caused by the active reaction of resistant cultivar, starting off at the point of contact with the virus.
