ISHS Acta Horticulturae 235: XIV International Symposium on Fruit Tree Virus Diseases

DIFFERENT DISEASES CAUSED BY THE CHLOROTIC LEAF SPOT VIRUS ON THE FRUIT TREES

Authors:   J.C. Desvignes, R. Boyé
Abstract:
Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (CLSV) causes highly diverse symptomatology in the genera Prunus and Malus, as proven by large scale indexing of several hundred fruit varieties.

The following kinds of symptoms are generally the expression of distinct and stable virus strains :

  • skin russeting in ring patterns on apple fruit (russet ring)
  • discolored or chlorotic rings and flecks on peach fruit
  • fine chlorotic distortion and puckering on Prunus leaves (butteratura)
  • necrotic pittings on apricot, cherry and plum fruit (false plum pox)
  • split bark or rough bark on cherry and prune d'Agen.

On the other hand, grafting can cause by itself some abnormalities in cases of disparities in receptivity and sensitivity of the cultivars assembled :

  • apricot incompatibility and rosette
  • probably apricot viruela
  • stem pitting on some plum rootstocks.
