Abstract:
In a commercial orchard of french prune (Prunus domestica L. cv.
D'Agen) on Myrobalan plum (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.) rootstock, in Chile, with a high incidence of dying trees, brownline symptoms were noted.
Tomato ringspot virus (TomRSV) was isolated from the leaves of Myrobalan rootstock suckers to cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), and was consistently detected with the enzyme linked inmunosorbent assay (ELISA). The dagger nematode (Xiphinema americanum, sensu lato), known efficient vector of TomRSV, is commonly present in the Chilean prune orchards, and is possibly playing a role in the natural spread of the virus there.
This is the first report of TomRSV associated with brownline disease of prune trees in South America.
