ISHS Acta Horticulturae 235: XIV International Symposium on Fruit Tree Virus Diseases

IMPROVEMENT OF GREENHOUSE AND FIELD INDEXING TECHNIQUES FOR FRUIT TREE VIRUSES.

Authors:   G.L. Gilles, H. Bormans
Abstract:
Greenhouse indexing with woody indicators looks very interesting for shortening the time needed to observe symptoms in the classical field indexing (one to three months instead of one to three years). Greenhouse indexing is therefore very useful, especially when no other detection method (ELISA….) is available.

Greenhouse indexing is already reliable for different fruit tree viruses (in our country apple, pear, cherry, and plum). Some viruses give promising results, others give no results or are not investigated until now. A summary of the results obtained until this date will be presented.

In the field, an attempt of permanent control of reinfection by grafting an indicator on the mother tree gives promising results. The possibility to use the indicators on their own roots will also be discussed.
