Abstract:
The small non-enveloped bacilliform virus associated with top spotting disease of kalanchoe was purified from plants co-infected with kalanchoe carlavirus (KV-1). Following partial separation of the two viruses by centrifugation in cesium sulphate density gradients, residual KV-1 was removed by affinity chromatography on agarose-Protein A charged with anti-KV-1 immunoglobulin.
The purified bacilliform virus was transmitted mechanically to symptomless KV-1-infected kalanchoe test plants, in which typical top-spotting symptoms developed.
The kalanchoe bacilliform virus was not transmitted to any test plants other than kalanchoe, and was not related serologically to any of 6 other viruses of similar morphology.
