ISHS Acta Horticulturae 234: VII International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

OCCURRENCE OF CANNA YELLOW MOTTLE VIRUS IN NORTH AMERICA

Author:   B.E.L. Lockhart
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1988.234.7
Abstract:
Three cvs. of canna in commercial horticultural greenhouses in Minnesota showed foliar chlorotic and necrotic mottle and streaking symptoms similar to those described for canna yellow mottle in Japan. Non-enveloped bacilliform particles 31 nm in diameter and averaging 130 nm in length were always associated with yellow mottle symptoms. The canna bacilliform virus was not related to any of 6 other viruses of similar morphology. Because the canna bacilliform virus was frequently found in mixed infections with cucumber mosaic virus and/or a potyvirus, assumed to be canna mosaic virus, its exact role in the etiology of the disease remains to be clarified.
