Abstract:
The possibility to introduce into plants different types of genes at will, offers new ways for the control of virus diseases.
At present the most successful approach seems to be the introduction of genes leading to the expression of viral coat proteins.
The potential of a number of other approaches such as genes encoding: antisense RNAs, satellite or interfering RNAs, RNA-scrambling-RNAs, resistance factors, antibodies, vector repellents and vector toxins are discussed.
Possible combinations of genes leading to long lasting resistance are indicated.
