Abstract:
Camellia japonica and C. sasanqua from the East Adriatic coast suffering from CLYM disease or showing necrotic rings on leaves contain rod-shaped particles in the cytoplasm and rarely in the nucleus of epidermal and mesophyll cells.
These particles were also found in pollen tetrades of C. sasanqua. Particles (30 x 150 nm) consist mostly of tightly packed turns of a 10 nm filament, sometimes they occur "uncoiled" forming a loosely arranged network.
Treatment with pepsin and ribonuclease indicates that the rod-like particles probably not only consist of protein.
