ISHS Acta Horticulturae 234: VII International Symposium on Virus Diseases of Ornamental Plants

NATURALLY OCCURRING VIRUSES OF POKEWEED FOUND IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Authors:   J. Xia, S.W. Scott, O.W. Barnett
Abstract:
Most pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) in South Carolina and other southeastern states of the U.S.A. display prominent mosaic symptoms. Turnip mosaic virus (TurMV) was not detected in pokeweeds growing near brassica crops. Pokeweed mosaic virus (PoMV) was the predominant virus detected in pokeweeds from two locations in South Carolina. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) was detected in a pokeweed plant with chlorotic ringspot symptoms and tobacco mosaic virus was detected in another pokeweed plant. PoMV, TurMV, and CMV were distinguished by host range and reaction and by serology.
