Abstract:
A list of 48 virus and virus-like diseases reported outside (and presumably not yet present in) Europe has been prepared by reviewing the pertinent literature. 25% of these diseases are caused by poty-viruses, 14.5% are associated to fastidious prokaryotes, and 10.4% are caused by rhabdoviruses.
Many other different groups are represented.
The following pathogens which have some probability of being spread outside their original centers are discussed: bidens mottle virus, chrysanthemum phloem necrosis, commelina mosaic virus, cycas necrotic stunt virus, orchid viruses, lisianthus viruses, bulbous crop viruses, passiflora viruses, rhododendron necrotic ringspot virus and pathogens of urban landscape trees.
In Concluding remarks the problem of the revision of the EEC quarantine lists, that of the diseases which have not been confermed during the last 10–15 years, and that of the new pathogenic strains are discussed.
