Abstract:
Carnation yellow fleck virus (CYFV) is one of the most damaging viruses for carnation crops.
Symptoms (streak) are more severe under particular environmental conditions, at the flowering stage and when plants are also infected with carnation mottle virus (CarMV). In contrast, plants infected with CYFV alone often remain symptomless.
CYFV (closterovirus) is not transmitted mechanically but only by grafting or by aphids.
Within a scheme for production of "virus tested" plants, the ELISA test is the only method which can be used on a large scale for indexing mother plants and their progeny.
The potential value of different procedures (DAS-ELISA, indirect ELISA, avidin-biotin systems) is discussed.
