Abstract:
In the last two years ranunculus plants with flower virescence, stunting and phyllody have been observed in the Italian Riviera (Sanremo, Taggia, Ventimiglia). These symptoms were detected in open fields during the cutting (November-December) of ranunculus hybrids imported from France.
The percentage of affected plants was between 1–5‰. Electron-microscopy observations of ultrathin sections showed the presence of Mycoplasma-like Organisms (MLO) in the phloematic tubes.
These organisms were not present in the control samples.
Treatment with oxytetracycline for two months induced regression of the symptoms.
This indicates an etiological involvement of MLO in virescence and phyllody of ranunculus.
