Abstract:
A small but profitable apple growing industry has emerged at several choice locations on irrigated coastal valleys and plains of the western slopes of the peruvian Andes.
Chilling unit values to release buds from dormancy are negligible in this geographical area.
Adequate growing techniques have been adapted to local conditions after many years of practical "trial and error" research conducted by farmers, nurserymen and the agrochemicals industry.
The availability of new, improved cultivars has expanded the marketing potential.
Continuous cropping of apples has proven to be feasible and this allows local markets to be supplied with fresh apples on a "year-around" basis.
Apple growing areas and overall production are increasing.
This report reviews some of the climatic, economic and horticultural aspects related to apple growing in Peru.
