ISHS Acta Horticulturae 232: International Workshop on Apple Culture in the Tropics and Subtropics

POST HARVEST DISEASES ON APPLES IN THE STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL, BRAZIL

Author:   J.F. Fortes
Abstract:
The Brazilian apple industry grew in importance during the past ten years. As a consequence the fruit import decreased by fifty per cent. Despite of research development, the control of fruit rot in cold storage is still a concern. A two years survey was carried out in the State of Rio Grande do Sul in order to identify the main organisms involved in this problem. One thousand fruits of cv. Golden Delicious harvested in different orchards and kept in cold storage were evaluated. In the 1981 survey, 52.7% of the rots were caused by Alternaria alternata, 41.7% Penicillium expansum, 3.0% Rhizopus sp., 1.3% Botryosphaeria berengeria, and 1.3% undetermined. In 1982, 33.0% of the rots were due to Alternaria alternata, 20.5% Penicillium expansum, 45.5% Glomerella cingulata, and 1.0% undetermined. Fruit rot due to G. cingulata was high in fruit from orchards with poor disease management.
