RECOMMENDED PRACTICES FOR TRAINING AND PRUNING APPLE TREES IN SOUTH BRAZIL |

| Abstract:
The relatively low mean yields of the apple orchards in the state of Santa Catarina, in the range of 15–16 tons/ha, are primarily due to large spacings, inadequate training, insufficient tree height and excessive crops during the first years of bearing. Mean yield capacity per hectare only reaches 2390 m2, 2200 m2 and 2670 m2 with the main cvs. ‘Gala’, ‘Golden Delicious’ and ‘Fuji’, respectively. At present the predominant training system in South Brazil is the central leader. The most important steps for adequate training are described for this system as a result of various studies carried out at Caçador and Fraiburgo, Santa Catarina. In order to increase yield capacity, more adequate spacings for semi-vigorous rootstocks and the training of apple trees to an optimal height in accord with spacing between rows are suggested. Some effects of summer pruning in cropping apple trees are discussed. | |
