ISHS Acta Horticulturae 232: International Workshop on Apple Culture in the Tropics and Subtropics

DORMANCY DEVELOPMENT IN APPLE TREES CVS. GALA, GOLDEN AND FUJI, IN PELOTAS, RS

Authors:   F.G. Herter, N.L. Finardi, J.C. Mauget
Abstract:
A better knowledge of the dormancy process in apple trees under climatic condition of Southern Brazil is very important to understand the performance of different cultivars in relation to ambiental conditions and their effects on blooming, leafing and fruit production.

The mean time of budburst (MTB) was studied from March to September, 1986, in Pelotas, RS, for the cvs. Gala, Golden Delicious and Fuji. The study was done using cuttings with just one bud to observe the various stages of dormancy.

The results show that lateral buds of 'Gala' started dormancy in March while its deep dormancy was in April/May (500–600 hours MTB), breaking of dormancy in July and post dormancy after 20th August or beginning of September. 'Golden Delicious' had its beginning of dormancy in April, deep dormancy in May/June (300–400 hours MTB), end mid-dormancy in July and the postperiod was hard to define. 'Fuji' started dormancy in May, its deep dormancy was in June/July (290–350 hours MTB) and end of dormancy by August/September overlapping with the post dormancy period.

'Gala' was the cultivar showing the highest standard deviation of time of budburst and the lowest value for the final percent of budburst. This cultivar showed deeper dormancy than the other two. The beginning of dormancy of the three cultivars did not occur at the same time.

The final rate of budburst had lower values for the cvs. Gala and Golden Delicious, probably due to the low proportion of budburst in the terminal buds.
