Authors:   D.G. Vala, K.U. Solanky, V.D. Desai, H.U. Joshi
Abstract:
A systematic survey revealed the presence of various foliage diseases, such as leaf anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Gloeosporium mangiferae), ashy gray angular leaf spot or marginal blight (Lophodermium mangiferae), leaf blight or papery blight (Guignardia mangiferae and Phyllostictina mangiferea), gray leaf blight (Pestalotia mangiferae), leaf scab (Astroniella sp., Hendersonia sp. and Pyrenochaeta sp.), tip blight or olivacious blight (Phyllosticta mangiferae), sooty mould or sooty blotch (Capnodium ramosum), bacterial leaf spot and canker (Pseudomonas mangiferae) and red rust(Cephaleuros mycoidea). The symptoms produced were studied and the identity of the pathogens were confirmed. The powdery mildew, anthracnose (C. gloeosporioides), tip blight (Phyllosticta mangiferae), gray blight (Pestalotia mangiferae) and red rust (C. mycoidea) were observed in serious proportion. C. gloeosporioides, L. mangiferae, Phyllostictina mangiferae and Guignardia mangiferae, Astromella sp., Hendersonia sp., Pyrenochaeta sp. and C. mycoidea constitute the new records for Gujarat wShile Phyllostictina mangiferae, Phyllosticta mangiferae, Astromeila sp., Hendersonia sp. and Pyrenochaeta sp. seems to be new pathogens of mango.

Further, survey of mango orchards in South Gujarat area revealed the presence of black stem (Rhinocladium corticolum), powdery mildew (Oidium mangiferae) and anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosyorioides) infecting inflorescenes and loranthus (Dendrophthoe falcata), a flowering parasite, in a considerable proportion causing severe damage. Various post-harvest rots of mango, namely, anthracnose (C. gloeosporioides and F.mangiferae), lateral rat (Gloeosporium sp.), stem end rot (Dothiorella sp.), soft rot (Phoma sp.) and aspergillus rot (Aspergillus sp.) were also recorded. They constitute the new records for Gujarat State.
