Abstract:
Seven of the 13 papers were presented orally.
Major concern was expressed by the delegates on the increase in prevalence and intensity of mango bacterial canker (Xanthomonas compectris) in Mangifera indica during the last few years in many areas.
A critical survey, particularly in Lucknow and nearby areas, was recommended to assess whether varieties like Mallika and introduction of other polyembryonic varieties in North India have been the contributing factors to this malady.
Further studies on the chemical control of the disease including cost-benefit ratio should be carried out.
The report of perpetuation of powdery mildew of mango in old leaves and malformed panicles upto the next season is a highly significant development.
The control of this disease by correctly timing prebloom spray was applauded.
Some workers also suggested testing of spray chemicals during dormant periods of the disease.
The group strongly felt that chemicals recommended for application should be among the scheduled ones notified by the registration committee.
Residue data for safety of consumers must accompany all chemical control recommendations.
A new post-harvest fungal disease of mango caused by Pestolotiopsis blendicala reported from IIHR, Bangalore should be monitored for its distribution.
