ISHS Acta Horticulturae 231: II International Symposium on Mango

EFFECTS OF TAL-PROLONG ON SHELF-LIFE AND QUALITY ATTRIBUTES OF MANGO

Author:   S. Krishnamurthy
Abstract:
Effects of skin coating with Tal-prolong at 1, 1.5 and 2 per cent concentrations on ripening, shelf-life and quality attributes of Alphonso mango were studied under ambient storage conditions (28–32°C; 30–60 per cent RH). Prolong delayed ripening by 4 to 5 days at 1 per cent concentration. This delayed ripening was correlated with reduced softening, development of yellow colour of the peel, acidity and increased total soluble solids and carotenoids in the pulp. Loss in weight was less in Prolong-treated fruits. When used at 1.5 and 2 per cent, normal ripening was affected. The fruits remained green and soft with high percentage of spoilage. Quality attributes of 1 per cent Prolong-treated fruits were comparable with those of control fruits except for the dull yellowish colour of the peel in treated fruits as compared to the bright orange colour of the control fruits. On the whole, 1 per cent Prolong delayed ripening of Alphonso mango primarily by inhibiting the development of yellow peel colour and delaying some of the ripening changes.
