MANAGEMENT OF TERMITES IN MANGO ORCHARD

Authors:   G.K. Veeresh, D. Rajagopal, N.G. Kumar
Abstract:
Studies were made on the infestation of termites and their prevention on mango trees. Three species of termites, namely, Odontotermes wallonensis, O. obesus and O. horni were dominant in the area and also constructed earthen sheeting on the stem of small trees. To prevent termite attack, the trees were treated with aldrin 30 EC at 0.06, 0.12 and 0.2 per cent, and heptachlor 6 per cent dust at 2.5, 3 and 4 g/tree compared to the application of sorghum earhead husk, sand, wood ash each at the base of the tree and swabbing the stem with coal tar. In all the treatments, except aldrin, termite attack was noticed within 100 days after-treatment. However, heptachlor (6 per cent) dust at all concentrations and coal tar treated trees recorded only 10 per cent termite attack compared to 30 to 50 per cent attack in sand, sorghum husk, wood ash and untreated check. There was no incidence on aldrin treated trees in all the concentrations.
