ISHS Acta Horticulturae 231: II International Symposium on Mango

RELATIVE INCIDENCE OF MANGO NUT WEEVIL STERNOCHETUS MANGIFERAE (FABRICIUS) ON DIFFERENT MANGO VARIETIES

Author:   S.P. Singh
Abstract:
The present investigations on the relative incidence of mango nut weevil were carried out during 1980–82 on 33 varieties at Central Horticultural Experiment Station, Chethalli, Kodagu, Karnataka. None of the varieties was free from infection. On an average, the per cent infestation ranged from 17 to 86.67. Kalepad (17 per cent), hybrid 11/15—Neelum × Himayuddin (17.33 per cent), Kalad (19.67 per cent), Rataul (20.67 per cent), Kadiri (21 per cent), Swarna Jehangir (23 per cent), Rajapuri (25.33 per cent) and Langra (26 per cent) were significantly less infested in comparison to Safeda Malihabadi (51.67 per cent), Dusheri (53 per cent), Himayuddin (59 per cent), Kongettira—a local seedling (59.67 per cent), Mulgoa (64 per cent), Neelum (65.33 per cent), Dil Pasand (67.67 per cent), Banganapalli (71 per cent), Raspuri (71.33 per cent), Alphanso (72 per cent), Totapari (75 per cent), Samarbehisht Alibagh (76 per cent), hybrid 7/1—Bangalora × Himayuddin (85.67 per cent) and Hamlet (86.67 per cent) were severely infested. A maximum number of seven weevils per nut was recorded from Himayuddin. All the varieties on an average supported more than one weevil per nut. Kadiri (1.03), Langra (1.06), Hybrid 11/15 (1.08) and Gulabkhas (1.08) had significantly less weevils per nut while Himayuddin (1 61), Dil Pasand (1.64), hybrid 7/1 (1.82) and Hamlet (1.86) were harbouring high weevil population per nut.
