SPOT APPLICATION OF INSECTICIDES FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF MANGO STONE WEEVIL, STERNOCHETUS MANGIFERAE (FABR.)

Authors:   P.L. Tandon, R.P. Shukla
Abstract:
Studies on the management of mango stone weevil, Sternochetus mangiferae (Fabr.) through foliar spray and spot application of insecticides were conducted for two years during 1982–83. Seven treatments tested during 1982 revealed that deltamethrin (0.0025 per cent) was most effective and registered the lowest mean percentage weevil infestation (13.5). Statistically, it was at par with carbaryl (0.1 per cent) in which mean percentage infestation recorded was 14.7. In the second experiment during 1983 where 13 treatments were tested, deltamethrin (0.003 per cent) spray during pre-oviposition period was found most effective and registered only 5.45 per cent mean infestation. The second effective treatment was spot spray application of diazinon (0.05 per cent) which was at per with spot application of diazinon alone. When effectiveness and cost of insecticides were taken into consideration, spot application of diazinon (0.05 per cent) during adult diapause proved quite effective, economical (Re. 0.48/tree) and ecologically safe.
