Abstract:
This paper outlines the two most important diseases limiting commercial production of mangoes on the North coast of New South Wales.
It describes their symptoms, source of inoculum, and method of spread and infection.
Management strategies recommended to control these diseases are listed.
These include cultural practices and tree management, variety selection and protective fungicide spraying.
Research into an alternative approach based on disease forecasting is described.
This involves using a curative fungicide with the advantage that sprays need only be applied after infections occur.
The results of this work using prochloraz and a disease detection instrument known as Mango Anthracnose Estimator (MAE) are presented.
Results show that using this method, 1–4 anthracnose sprays can be saved during dry seasons.
