GROWING SYSTEMS FOR GREENHOUSE TOMATO PRODUCTION UNDER HIGH PHOTOSYNTHETIC PHOTON FLUX DENSITY SUPPLEMENTAL LIGHTING

Authors:   M. Dorais, A. Gosselin, Marc-J. Trudel
Abstract:
Tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Caruso) were grown under 2 levels of supplemental lighting (100 and 150 μmol/ (m2.s), PAR) for a photoperiod of 16 hours. Plants were intercropped 4 times with plantings on July 24, November 2, February 5 and April 19. Three plant populations were also compared: constant 3.5 or 2.3 plants/m2 for all crops as well as a sequence of 3.5, 2.3, 3.5, and 3.5 plants/m2 for the 4 intercrops respectively. Results indicated that yields of more than 1.5 kg/m2 per week can be obtained from a tomato crop grown under 150 μmol/(m2 s) of supplemental lighting at a plant population of 3.5 plants/m2. It was difficult to harvest more than 1.2 kg/m2 per week at lower light level and/or plant population. Yearly marketable yields of 70 kg/m2 should be harvested using the best growing conditions.
