ROOT IN THE MOIST AIR METHOD WITH THE SLIGHTLY SLOPED BED FOR THE HYDROPONIC CULTURE

Authors:   S. Kuwano, T. Fujita
Abstract:
Recently, "Root in the moist air method" had been developed as a new type system of the hydroponic culture. It was characterized by that the roots of plant distributed in the moist air on the floating bed which was covered with the non-woven fabric hanging into the nutrient solution. Though, in this bed, high levels of base, such as magnesium and calcium, were accumulated by the selective absorbtion of the plant at the center of the floating bed, and consequently the growth of roots tended to be poor resulting from high EC and high pH value in that position.

Therefore, the floating bed was improved by the additions of a slightly slope and the dripping tubes for supplying nutrient solution to rinse the excess of base.

Owing to the improvement for the system, there was no accumulation of base at the center of the floating bed in tomato cropping. And it was observed that the root mat of tomato plants grown under the improved system were normally formed.
