A CONTROL METHOD BASED ON AN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TECHNIQUE AND ITS APPLICATION FOR CONTROLLING PLANT ENVIRONMENT

Authors:   Y. Harazono, H. Kamiya, K. Yabuki
Abstract:
We developed a control method for maximizing plant growth and production using plant information. This control logic is expressed in prolog (Prolog KABA), an artificial intelligence language and consists of 19 rules of fundamental plant/environment relations. The new set values for controlling plant environments are determined through the relative comparison of present plant/environment conditions with the previous state.

A computer-controlled growth chamber, in which leaf lettuce were grown under artificial light, was operated by this logic. Light level was independently controlled to simulate daily variation of solar radiation, while air temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 concentration were controlled according to the set points derived by the logic from the plant activities. Although the number of the rules was small, the plant environment in the growth chamber was controlled reasonably stable, and most of the changed environment by this method made the plant activities promote or keep good conditions. The control method using an artificial intelligence technique can be useful to control the plant environment in an actual greenhouse.
