ISHS Acta Horticulturae 230: Symposium on High Technology in Protected Cultivation

EFFECTS OF LOW O2 CONCENTRATION ON NET PHOTOSYNTHESIS OF C3 PLANTLETS IN VITRO

Authors:   N. Shimada, F. Tanaka, T. Kozai
Abstract:
Explants of tissue-cultured Primula malacoides (C3 plant) were cultured on ½ MS agar medium containing 3% sucrose under a photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of 110 μmol m-2 s-1. Twenty days after the start of subculture, the plantlets were exposed to the moistened gas with 0.0366% CO2 and either 1, 10, or 21% O2 (the rest being N2). The net photosynthetic rates of the plantlets in 1% O2 and 10% O2 were, respectively, about 3 times, 1.5 times larger than that in 21% O2. A similar result has also been obtained for Chrysanthemum morifolium (C3 plant).
