ISHS Acta Horticulturae 23: I International Symposium on Flowerbulbs

INFLUENCE OF LIGHT ON FLOWER BUD ABSCISSION IN PLANTS OF THE LILY CULTIVAR 'ENCHANTMENT'

Authors:   G.A. Kamerbeek, A.J.B. Durieux
Abstract:
In the year-round production of flowers from bulbs, various problems arise. The environmental conditions in the glasshouse in wintertime may limit normal development.

The present study concerns flower bud abscission in lily plants. The experiments performed under phytotron conditions yielded information concerning the influence of light. A negative relationship was observed between the amount of light and the percentage of flower buds showing abscission. During development there is a critical period in which the flower bud is most likely to undergo abscission. This period is correlated with the phase of meiosis in the stamens. Bud abscission gradually decreases when the lily bulbs have been stored for much longer periods at a low temperature.
