THE INTERACTION OF TEMPERATURE AND PHOTOPERIOD ON GROWTH AND FLOWERING OF LILIUM LONGIFLORUM THUNB. CV.'NELLIE WHITE'

Abstract:
Plants from non-cooled bulbs of the cv. 'Nellie White' were grown at 15° or 21°C, and were exposed upon emergence to sequential long days (LD's). After the LD treatments plants grown at 15°C were shifted to 21°C and vice versa. LD treatments were not effective at 21°C. After 20 or more LD's at 15°C, a 21°C temperature hastened flowering. Bulbs of cv. 'Nellie White' were given a 4°C cold treatment for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 weeks. Upon emergence the above respective treatments were given 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0 weeks of LD's. All treatments received 6 weeks of cold and/or LD's. These experiments determined that there was a near interrelationship between the cold and LD stimuli. All treatments had similar flowering dates.
