ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF FLOWER PRODUCTION ON BULB-GROWING FARMS |

| Abstract:
In the past, bulbs were mainly produced by specialized growers; the same holds for the production of cut flowers from bulbs. Increasing costs, especially for labour, and shrinking profits have considerably increased the percentage of bulb nurseries yielding an inadequate income for the grower. The problem of the structural labour surplus on specialized holdings during the winter months can be solved by the seasonal production of cut flowers from bulbs. Liberalization of the export regulations for cut flowers within the Common Market has increased demand, resulting in turn in higher prices for cut tulips and daffodils. All these factors have promoted flower production on bulb farms. | |
