| Abstract:
Influence of size and shape of tulip bulbs on root development was studied on 6 consecutive sampling dates. Root weight and bulb weight, measured on the same dates, were linearly correlated. Bulb shape played no part when bulb weights were equal. Root weight continued to increase during the entire experimental period. Increase in root weight concurrent with bulb weight can be attributed partly to root number and root length until incipient sprouting. Beyond this stage root length and probably root diameter or dry matter content were the factors involved. Since there is a good correlation between bulb weight and the product of the largest horizontal dimensions of the bulb, this product may be substituted for bulb weight. | |
