ISHS Acta Horticulturae 23: I International Symposium on Flowerbulbs

WEED COMPETITION IN NARCISSUS CROPS

Author:   H.M. Lawson
Abstract:
Examples are given of the direct effects of competition by weeds on the growth of the narcissus crop and the stages of growth at which competition may occur. The modifying effects of factors such as growing systems, crop cultivar, weed flora and climate are briefly outlined. The evidence presented suggests that competition is most likely to take place during the period of flower initiation and maximum bulb growth, and that this may result in adverse effects on bulb yield and subsequent flower production.
