CONTROL OF FUSARIUM IN SOME BULBOUS AND TUBEROUS PLANTS GROWN FOR CUTFLOWER PRODUCTION UNDER GLASS

Author:   G. Scholten
Abstract:
Fusarium oxysporum can become a serious problem for freesia growers. There are great differences in susceptibility between cultivars, losses being most serious at high soil temperatures. Soil disinfection by steam treatment or with chloropicrin proved to be more effective than with methylbromide. Promising results were obtained with disinfection of corms with Benlate.

In seed-grown lilies, complete elimination of Fusarium oxysporum from the soil was obtained by steaming and by the use of chloropicrin or products containing methylisothiocyanate; methyl-bromide, metam sodium, and formaldehyde were less effective. Benlate treatment of infected bulbs and scales used for vegetative progagation gave excellent results.

For Nerine bulbs infected by Fusarium moniliforme, certain cultural methods gave improvement, but still better results can be obtained by using Benlate.
