THE BIOSYNTHESIS OF TERPENES IN CELL-FREE EXTRACTS FROM BULBS AS RELATED TO GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT*

Authors:   G.L. Staby, A.A. De Hertogh
Abstract:
Cell-free extracts which incorporate mevalonate (MVA)-2-14C into neutral terpenes were obtained from Tulipa gesneriana L. cv. 'Ralph', and 'Wedgwood' iris. The main source of enzymes from the tulip was the anthers while the sprouts, scales and roots were sources in iris. Extracts of non-cold treated iris exhibited the least activity with increasing activity as the bulbs initiated and developed reproductive tissue at 9°C and 17°C. The maximum incorporation rate of the tulip was prior to low temperature treatments. This incorporation rate initially decreased and subsequently increased during the low temperature treatments. Placing the tulip bulbs at 18°C in the greenhouse completely inhibited further incorporation of MVA-2-14C by the extracts.
