SOME ASPECTS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BIOLOGICAL AND THE ECONOMIC YIELD OF TULIP BULBS

Author:   M.J.G. Timmer
Abstract:
Analysis of field experiments with tulips showed that there is a relationship between the biological yield (total weight of all harvested bulbs per plant) and the economic yield (number of salable bulbs and weight of the planting material per plant). Changes in the economic yield were dependent on changes in total bulb weight per plant and the relationship between the economic and biological yield. Changes in the weight of the harvested bulbs were caused by differences in the size of the planted bulbs and the growing conditions; only cultivar characteristics could change the relationship, but this effect could also be obtained by varying temperature during storage. Some aspects of the relationship are discussed.
