INFLUENCE OF 8-HYDROXYQUINOLINE CITRATE AND SUCROSE ON CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT OF LEAVES AND FLORETS OF CUT GLADIOLUS SPIKES

Author:   F.J. Marousky
Abstract:
Gladiolus spikes were harvested as tight buds and held in water, 600 ppm 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (8-HQC), with or without 4% sucrose, until florets were developed. Principal sugars and their concentrations in florets and leaves were determined using paper chromatographic techniques. Florets on spikes held in sucrose or 8-HQC + sucrose showed a greater increase in sugars than on spikes held in water. Sugars in leaves on spikes held in water or 8-HQC decreased, but in leaves on spikes held in sucrose or 8-HQC + sucrose sugars decreased somewhat during the first few days and then rapidly increased. Principal sugars found in leaves and florets were fructose, glucose, and sucrose. The most concentrated sugar in florets was fructose and in leaves was glucose. Sucrose was the least prominent sugar detected. Sugars were more concentrated in florets from winter-blooming spikes than from spring-blooming spikes. The 8-HQC + sucrose was as effective in increasing the sugar content of florets in spring- as in winter-bloomed spikes.
