ISHS Acta Horticulturae 23: I International Symposium on Flowerbulbs

INFLUENCE OF HEAT-TREATMENT TEMPERATURES DURING STORAGE ON FLOWER FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF 5°-TULIPS

Authors:   A.F.G. Slootweg, P. Hoogeterp
Abstract:
The influence of pre-planting temperature treatment of tulip bulbs was investigated with respect to the time of flowering and the duration of the growth period between planting and flowering in a heated glasshouse. The results have led to a better understanding of the reaction of the bulb to different treatments. Storage at 34°C for one week during the time in which the leaves are initiated will accelerate this process. Application of 38°C for one week may have a certain aftereffect, resulting in short-ening of the growth period in the glasshouse.

However, flower initiation is generally most rapid at 17–20°C; both higher and lower temperatures retard flower formation. As is shown in table 3, there are some exceptions to this. In cv. 'Apeldoorn', however, the growth period in the glasshouse was shorter when flower formation was accomplished at a lower temperature (13°C).
