CHANGES OF ENDOGENOUS GROWTH SUBSTANCES IN EASTER LILY AS EFFECTED BY COOLING

Author:   Y. Tsukamoto
Abstract:
Growth-promoting and growth-inhibiting substances in the Easter Lily bulb were measured by the assay of Avena straight growth test during cooling. Only very small amounts of growth-promoting substances were present prior to cooling (13°C for 2 weeks, followed by 8°C for 5 weeks), but a considerable increase was noticed in the outer scales after cooling, particularly in bulbs treated in advance with hot water (45–48°C for 1 hour). The more scales were removed prior to the cooling, the less sprouting occurred two weeks after planting.
