ISHS Acta Horticulturae 229: Symposium on Biological Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

EFFECT OF ROOT-ZONE HEATING ON POTPLANTS

Author:   J.V.M. Vogelezang
Abstract:
Experiments with Saintpaulia and Begonia were carried out in order to investigate the effects of benchheating systems on microclimate and plant responses. Research with Saintpaulia included three greenhouse experiments with root-zone temperatures ranging from 17 to 25°C. Elevated root-zone temperatures accelerated flowering as a result of an enhanced rate of plant growth and a promoted flower development. Benchheating reduced cultivation time without unfavourable effects on plant quality and keepability. Plant temperatures are also involved in these processes. Experiments with Begonia were carried out with root-zone temperatures up to 29°C. A reduced flowering response was observed for the highest root-zone temperature. An interaction with the air temperature was also found. Reduction of the root-zone temperature from 29°C to 23 or 16°C during the generative phase was not affective in prohibiting the negative flowering response at the highest root-zone temperature.
