ISHS Acta Horticulturae 229: Symposium on Biological Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

ENERGY SAVING THROUGH BREEDING FOR DISEASE RESISTANCE

Authors:   F. Saccardo, A. Sonnino
Abstract:
The use of varieties more suitable to the particular microclimatic conditions of greenhouses, could contribute in reducing the relative production costs. Furthermore the use of resistant cultivars might reduce the environmental pollution.

This work reports on the strategies followed in order to obtain the above mentioned scopes.

In this framework tomato varieties and hybrids, resistant to different diseases ( Verticillium dahliae, Fusarium oxysporum, Meloidogyme spp. and TMV) were evaluated in yield trial in greenhouses. The results over three years of trials showed that the resistant varieties yielded satisfactorily in the unsterilyzed soil.
