ISHS Acta Horticulturae 229: Symposium on Biological Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

ORNAMENTAL PLANTS PRODUCTION IN SOLAR ACTIVE GREENHOUSE

Authors:   S. Camporeale, C.A. Campiotti, F. Pacciaroni, M.F. Salice, R. Vitale
Abstract:
As a part of a project for the use of renewable energy in agriculture, a greenhouse for ornamental plant production, covering a surface of 537 m2, has been built at ENEA - C.R.E. Casaccia in Rome. The greenhouse is heated by an active solar system composed of air solar collectors, a rock bed storage and two heat pumps. Double layer polymetacrilate is used as covering material and thermal screens made of aluminium and polyester are employed for light control and energy saving. Different species of Philodendron, Syngonium and Spathiphillum were grown during the experimental period. Climatic, metereological and process data are collected by an automatic data acquisition system for energetic behaviour evaluations. Inside temperature was always sufficient for plant growth even in coldest winter period and no phisiological stresses were observed. Nevertheless, further work is required to increase the efficiency of the solar system and to improve heat exchanges in the store and the use of heat pumps in order to obtain higher levels of temperature required for commercial production.
