IRRIGATION EXPERIMENT USING A LINE-SOURCE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

Authors:   J. Barragan, I. Recasens
Abstract:
A line source sprinkler plot irrigation system, offers a convenient means of obtaining crop production function data since it allows more irrigation variables than the traditional systems. Besides being economical and single to install and operate, this system reguires a relatively small test area and water supply.

The system was used in 1982 to determine corn (Zea Mays) yield under the influence of irrigation. When the yield response functions were analyzed using polynomial regression techniques, grain yield was found to be related linearly to seasonal irrigation.

A pressure chamber was used to measure leaf water potential (LWP) during the growing season. The differences in applied water produced a gradient in midday LWP perpendicular to the line source.
