ISHS Acta Horticulturae 228: IV International Symposium on Water Supply and Irrigation in the Open and under Protected Cultivation

IRRIGATION WATERS OF THE EMILIA-ROMAGNA REGION VARIATION IN QUALITY DURING THE TEN-YEAR PERIOD FROM 1973–1982

Author:   M. Montorsi
Abstract:
The chemical and physical-chemical characteristics of the river and stream waters of Emilia-Romagna region are described, with particular attention to the use of these for irrigation. The study began in 1973–74 with samples being taken from each water course on the via Emilia in periods of low, medium, high water and on the high and low parts of the courses. In 1981–82 a second round of samples was taken on the via Emilia to reveal the possible variations in the same water-courses over the decade. Of the fundamental parameters useful in the evaluation of the waters for irrigation use, only the salinity and alkalinity of several rivers were judged to be high enough to cause irrigation problems, either in the first or second cycle of samples. In 1981–82, in comparison with ten years before, and as a general average, a slight increase in the salinity was found, whereas a slight decrease in alkalinity was the case. The possible danger due to the presence of bicarbonates was cancelled out in all the waters tested by the presence of notable quantities of calcium and magnesium. As for the salinity, even if irrigation were to be made with the high-salinity waters, this should not inflict damage on the main field-crops of the region.
