ISHS Acta Horticulturae 228: IV International Symposium on Water Supply and Irrigation in the Open and under Protected Cultivation

GROWTH, FLOWERING, SETTING AND YIELD OF KIDNEY BEAN (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L.) AS INFLUENCED BY WATER REGIME, P FERTILIZATION AND BNOA TREATMENT.

Authors:   A. Alvino, P. Tedeschi, G. Zerbi
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gain additional knowledge regarding the factors limiting the yield of kidney bean plants. On plants grown in percolation lysimeters a factorial experiment was carried out testing three irrigation regimes, three P-fertilization levels and a hormone treatment plus a non-treated control. In the "wet" irrigation regime water was given whenever the evaporation from an "A" Class Pan reached 15 mm; in the intermediate and dry regimes water was added at 45 mm and 120 mm respectively. The P levels were equivalent to 0–150 and 300 kg/ha. BNOA was sprayed twice on flowers at 1% concentration.

Data are reported on growth of plants, flowering dynamics, yield and its components.

While this experiment confirmed a previous one about the importance of water availability, it did not succeed in increasing the number of matured pods, that is the yield, by BNOA treatments and by increasing levels of P2O5.
