ISHS Acta Horticulturae 228: IV International Symposium on Water Supply and Irrigation in the Open and under Protected Cultivation

A STUDY ON STRAWBERRY WATER REQUIREMENTS

Author:   G. Strabbioli
Abstract:
The aim of this trial was to study the influence of different irrigation regimes on strawberries with relation to the soil and climatic characteristics of the region involved so as to improve quality and yield.

Virus-free cold stored runners of Aliso and Tuft varieties were used in double-row planting pattern with black PE film mulching spaced 30×35 cm (about 50.000 plants per hectare). The water supply, after a sprinkler irrigation during the first 15 days, was distributed by drip irrigation.

The irrigation depths were calculated on the basis of an "A Class" evaporimeter and evaporation was multiplied by the parameters 0.33 – 0.66 – 1.00 – 1.33, duly corrected for strawberry ground coverage and growing indexes. The irrigation interval was set every 10 mm of evaporation.

The main results included a lower yield per plant and a smaller fruit size in the control. Among the irrigation treatments, the differences in yield, fruit size and number of fruits per plant were not always significant.
