ISHS Acta Horticulturae 228: IV International Symposium on Water Supply and Irrigation in the Open and under Protected Cultivation

FRUIT RIPENING OF DIFFERENT TOMATO CULTIVARS AS INFLUENCED BY IRRIGATION REGIME AND TIME OF HARVESTING

Authors:   A. Alvino, R. d'Andria, G. Zerbi
Abstract:
Three tomato cultivars (Novamech, Rio Fuego and T2) were grown in plots under different irrigation regimes; imposed watering at time intervals corresponding to 130, 100, 70 and 40 mm of accumulated maximum crop evapotranspiration.

When the fruits of the first truss of the latest variety were mature, all fruits of 5 plants per plot were harvested and separately analyzed according to their position on the trusses.

Analytical and technological traits of each truss were evaluated at three harvesting times at near-weekly intervals. The treatments were ranked according to the Conti model.

Cultivar Rio Fuego had the best performance behaviour throughout the harvesting period. Over-irrigation proved detrimental to processing suitability and to the duration of the harvesting period. Correct irrigation timing showed constant quality throughout the harvestings. Overall quality decreased with time, while the lowest percentage of discard occurred at the middle harvesting.
