PROBLEMS IN IRRIGATION AT FARM AND FIELD LEVELS

Author:   L. Cavazza
Abstract:
A few brief considerations are presented on major irrigation problems to which more attention is currently being paid by researchers. Requirements of scheduling methods are listed and orientation for future research is outlined. Problems involved in spatial and temporal variability as well as in the existence of "critical stages" are mentioned. The choice of the irrigation system is briefly discussed. Obscure points which often act as bottlenecks preventing efficient application of scientific knowledge in practice are indicated. As an example of the gap existing between irrigation scientists and economists, problems in the yield response curve to irrigation depth are illustrated.
