Abstract:
In 1984–86 daminozide was applied to scion and shoots before grafting by dipping, and in the nursery by foliar sparays to different grafted combinations.
Daminozide reduced shoot development with different strengths according to the grafting combinations.
Use of daminozide seems a good alternative to mechanical topping.
The vegetative vigour of rooted grafts in the nursery is determined by the characteristics of the two parts of the graft and by their interaction, besides the cultivation techniques (fertilisation, irrigation, plant density etc.) and microclimate.
In past years, in many nursery areas of Northen Italy, insufficient shoot lignification was recorded.
Mechanical topping is normally employed to reduce apical dominance and thus excessive vegetative development.
However, topping causes other agronomic problems such as an excessive formation of axillary shoots and generally the reduction of nutrient reserves, thus diminishing the quality of rooted vines.
In consideration of these factors, we thought it was necessary to test the use of growth inhibitors as an alternate technique to mechanical topping on particularly vigorous rooting combinations with different vegetative behaviour.
