A MODIFIED METHOD OF CHIPBUDDING TEA (CAMELLIA SINENSIS)

Author:   C.W. Kayange
Abstract:
A modified method of chipbudding tea (Camellia sinensis) was developed at the Tea Research Foundation of Central Africa. Unrooted single node cuttings were used, and the leaves of both the rootstock and that of the scion were left intact. The budded cuttings were placed in shaded polythene tents. Once the cuttings rooted, the polythene tents were gradually removed. The operation was simple, eliminated the problem of suckers and produced a strong union. The survival rate in the nursery varied between 60 and 80 per cent depending on the rootstock and scion combinations. Survival in the field was good and leaf yields were increased by over 100 per cent with no loss in quality.
